Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Chinese astrology, Ba Zi, daily horoscopes, and how this site works — answered in plain English.
General
What is ChineseZodiacHoroscope.com?
ChineseZodiacHoroscope.com is a free platform for exploring Chinese astrology — specifically the Ba Zi (Four Pillars of Destiny) system. You can discover your Chinese zodiac sign and element, read your personalised daily horoscope, explore celebrity charts, and purchase in-depth Destiny and Compatibility reports.
Unlike simple year-of-the-animal tables, we use the authentic lunisolar calendar and a full calculation engine to give you an accurate Year, Month, and Day Pillar — not a generic "Year of the Dragon" description shared by hundreds of millions of people.
How is Chinese astrology different from Western astrology?
Western astrology places the Sun at the centre and divides the year into 12 solar signs (Aries, Taurus, etc.), focusing heavily on personality through the birth chart. Chinese astrology is built on the lunisolar calendar and the interplay of Yin/Yang plus the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water). Rather than a single sun sign, you have multiple pillars — Year, Month, Day, and optionally Hour — each carrying its own Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch.
Chinese astrology also incorporates 10-year luck cycles (大运, Dà Yùn) that show how your fortune shifts across different decades of your life, and a rich system of branch relationships (harmonies, clashes, punishments) that determine how people and time periods interact. Our glossary covers all the key terms in detail.
Is Chinese zodiac just based on your birth year?
The popular version you see on restaurant placemats is based solely on the year — but that is a major oversimplification. The authentic Ba Zi system uses your year, month, day, and (optionally) hour of birth. Each pillar adds a layer of nuance: your Month Pillar reveals your inner character and early life, and your Day Pillar — the Heavenly Stem of which is called your Day Master — is considered the most personal pillar of all.
Year-only readings are also inaccurate because the Chinese New Year does not fall on January 1st. The true boundary for Chinese astrology is Lì Chūn (立春, Start of Spring), which usually falls around February 4th each year. Use our calculator to get your exact sign.
What is Ba Zi (Four Pillars of Destiny)?
Ba Zi (八字, literally "eight characters") is the formal name for the Four Pillars of Destiny system. Your birth date and time produce four pillars — Year, Month, Day, Hour — and each pillar has two characters: a Heavenly Stem (天干) and an Earthly Branch (地支). That gives you eight characters in total, which encode your elemental make-up, personality tendencies, career aptitude, relationship patterns, and life trajectory.
Practitioners read the balance and interactions between these eight characters — along with the Ten Gods (十神) and 10-year luck cycles — to give detailed life guidance. Our Ba Zi glossary is a good starting point if you are new to the system.
Is this free to use?
Yes — the core features are completely free. Finding your Chinese zodiac sign and element, reading your daily horoscope, browsing celebrity charts, and exploring the site require no payment and no account. Creating a free account lets you save your profile, add family members, and access personalised sections like the Friends feature.
The only paid features are the in-depth Destiny Report and Compatibility Report, which are one-time purchases that generate a detailed multi-page PDF you can keep forever.
How accurate is Chinese astrology?
Chinese astrology is a classical system developed over thousands of years, refined through the Tang, Song, and Ming dynasties. Its accuracy depends heavily on having a correct birth date — and ideally birth time — as well as the skill of interpretation. The system does not make binary predictions; instead it maps energetic tendencies, strengths, and timing patterns that you can use as a framework for self-understanding.
Our calculations follow the traditional lunisolar calendar and are cross-verified against established Ba Zi references. We do not use AI to generate readings at runtime — all horoscope content is written by practitioners and assembled by our calculation engine, so you get consistent, repeatable results rather than hallucinated text.
Your Sign
How do I find my Chinese zodiac sign?
Visit our What's My Sign page and enter your date of birth. The calculator applies the traditional lunisolar calendar rules — including the Lì Chūn (立春) solar term boundary — to give you your accurate Year Animal, element, and polarity (Yin or Yang). You will also see your Month and Day Pillars if you are signed in with a profile.
Alternatively, click the floating "Find My Animal!" button on any page for a quick modal lookup. Your result is stored in a cookie so you see personalised content every visit, even without an account.
Why might my sign be different from what I've always been told?
Most online tools and the restaurant-placemat tradition use the Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year) as the year boundary — but this is incorrect for Ba Zi astrology. The authentic boundary is Lì Chūn (立春, Start of Spring), which typically falls around February 4th each year. If you were born in January or early February, your correct animal sign is almost certainly the one from the previous year.
For example, someone born on February 2nd 2000 is still a Rabbit (1999) in Ba Zi, not a Dragon (2000) — even though the Lunar New Year had already passed. Our calculator always applies the Lì Chūn boundary.
What are the Five Elements and how do they affect my sign?
The Five Elements — Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金), Water (水) — are the fundamental building blocks of Chinese metaphysics. Every animal sign in every year has an associated element, so you are not just a "Rabbit" but a "Water Rabbit" or "Metal Rabbit," and those two people have very different personalities and life patterns.
The elements interact through Generating (相生) and Controlling (相剋) cycles. A balanced chart has elements in harmony; imbalance creates both challenges and unique strengths. Your Destiny Report includes a full elemental balance analysis across all four pillars. Our glossary has detailed definitions for each element.
What is a Day Master?
Your Day Master (日主, Rì Zhǔ) is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar, and it is considered the most important single character in your Ba Zi chart. It represents your core self — your identity, the lens through which you experience the world, and the element that defines what is "favourable" or "unfavourable" for you personally.
There are ten possible Day Masters (one for each of the ten Heavenly Stems), split across the five elements in their Yin and Yang forms — for example, Jiǎ Wood (甲) is Yang Wood, and Yǐ Wood (乙) is Yin Wood. Knowing your Day Master is essential for understanding the Ten Gods relationships in your chart. You need your birth time and an account to see your Day Master on the profile page.
What does Yin and Yang mean for my sign?
Yin (陰) and Yang (陽) describe the polarity of your animal sign within the 60-year stem-branch cycle. Yang signs tend to be more outwardly expressive, action-oriented, and direct; Yin signs are more receptive, introspective, and indirect. This is a tendency, not a fixed personality trait — it interacts with your element and the rest of your chart.
The polarity also affects your Luck Pillar direction: Yang males and Yin females follow the calendar forward, while Yang females and Yin males follow it backward — a distinction that determines how your 10-year luck cycles are sequenced through life.
Can I look up specific years or browse all the signs?
Yes — our Animals section has a dedicated page for each of the 12 zodiac signs. Because the lunisolar calendar means that each animal covers a different range of dates every year, we deliberately do not publish simple year lists (they would be inaccurate for people born in January–February). Instead, use our sign calculator for a definitive answer, or browse a sign's page to learn about its character, traits, compatible signs, and elemental variations.
Daily Horoscope
How does the daily horoscope work?
Every calendar day has its own Day Pillar — a Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch pair — drawn from the 60-day stem-branch cycle. Our engine compares today's Day Pillar against your personal Year Pillar (your natal animal and element) to calculate how the day's energy interacts with your chart. Branch relationships such as Six Harmonies, Three Harmonies, and Six Clashes are detected and interpreted, and each of the four life areas (career, love, creativity, wellbeing) is scored accordingly.
All reading text is pre-written by astrology practitioners — over 1,300 unique content blocks — and assembled at request time. No AI generates your reading on the fly; you get accurate, consistent interpretation every time. Head to the Daily Horoscope page to see today's reading.
Is my daily reading personalised?
Yes — your reading is specific to your animal sign and element combination. A Water Ox gets a different reading from a Fire Ox on the same day because the elemental interactions differ. If you are logged in with a full profile, section headings also use your first name (e.g. "Sarah's Energy Forecast") and the Week Preview Strip shows the energy trend for your specific sign across the coming seven days.
Even without an account, if you have used the "Find My Animal!" calculator your reading is still personalised to your sign from the cookie — no login required for a personalised daily reading.
What are the energy meters?
The four energy meters on the daily horoscope card show scores (0–100) for Career, Love, Creativity, and Wellbeing for today. These are calculated from the interaction between today's Day Pillar and your natal chart — specifically which Ten God relationships the day activates. A day where the incoming element "generates" (supports) your Day Master scores higher in areas like wellbeing and creativity; a day where a clash branch appears may score lower in stability-related areas.
The meters are colour-coded in five tiers from low to high, giving you an at-a-glance snapshot before you dive into the written reading.
How often does the daily horoscope update?
The reading updates once per day at midnight in the Chinese Standard Time (UTC+8) reference frame, which is the traditional basis for the Ba Zi calendar. If you are in a different time zone, your reading switches over at the equivalent moment — so users in New York may see tomorrow's reading appear in the evening rather than at midnight local time.
The week preview strip always shows the seven-day window starting from today, updating daily so you can plan ahead.
Do I need an account for the daily horoscope?
No. As long as you have used the "What's My Sign" calculator (or the "Find My Animal!" button), your sign is stored in a browser cookie and your personalised daily reading is shown automatically. You do not need to create an account or sign in.
Creating a free account unlocks additional features: saving multiple family profiles, the Friends section, share buttons with your name embedded, and eventually push notifications for your daily reading.
Reports
What's included in the Personal Destiny Report?
The Personal Destiny Report is a full Ba Zi analysis based on your date — and optionally time — of birth. It covers your Four Pillars chart with Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, your Day Master and its strength, the Ten Gods present in your chart and what they mean for career, wealth, relationships and creativity, your elemental balance with favourable and unfavourable elements identified, branch relationship analysis (harmonies, clashes, punishments), special stars in your chart, and a Destiny Timeline mapping your eight 10-year luck pillar decades.
The report is delivered as a downloadable multi-page PDF as well as viewable online. Visit the Reports page to see a sample and purchase.
What's included in the Compatibility Report?
The Compatibility Report analyses two people's Ba Zi charts side by side across five dimensions: elemental harmony (do your charts support or clash?), animal sign compatibility via the Six Harmonies and Six Clashes, Day Master dynamics (how your core identities interact), cross-pillar branch relationships (harmonies and clashes between your respective pillars), and practical compatibility scores for romance, friendship, and business collaboration.
The report includes advice on how to navigate challenges, the best shared opportunities, and a full compatibility breakdown chart. It can be generated for any two people whose birth dates you know.
How is the report generated?
Reports are generated entirely from our Ba Zi calculation engine and a library of practitioner-written interpretation text — no AI writes your report at runtime. The engine calculates your chart, identifies which content blocks apply (based on your specific stems, branches, relationships, and scores), and assembles them into a coherent narrative. This means your report is consistent and repeatable, not a different answer each time you run it.
The resulting report is rendered as a polished PDF and also stored in your account for online reading anytime.
Can I get a report without knowing my birth time?
Yes. Your Year, Month, and Day Pillars can be calculated from your date of birth alone — no birth time is required. The Hour Pillar, which adds a fourth layer of nuance, is only included if you provide your birth time. Without a birth time you receive a complete Three Pillar (三柱) report that still covers the vast majority of Ba Zi interpretation.
If you do have your birth time (even an approximate one), we recommend including it — especially for the Day Master strength calculation, which considers the Hour Branch.
Can I buy a report as a gift?
Yes. When purchasing a Destiny or Compatibility Report you can enter the birth details of any person — you do not need to be buying for yourself. The report is generated and stored in your account, and you can share or forward the PDF. A dedicated gift flow (with a printable gift card) is planned for a future release.
How do I download my report as a PDF?
After purchase, your report is available in the My Reports library on your account. Open any report and use the download button in the top right corner to save the PDF to your device. The PDF is optimised for both screen reading and printing — ideal for giving as a physical gift.
Do you offer refunds?
Because reports are generated instantly as digital products, we are unable to offer refunds after delivery. We encourage you to review the free sample reports on the Reports page before purchasing, and to double-check the birth date you enter — a wrong date produces a different chart. If you experience a technical problem (the report did not generate or the PDF is unreadable), please contact us at astrology@ectosoft.com and we will resolve it.
Compatibility
How does Chinese zodiac compatibility work?
Chinese zodiac compatibility is primarily determined by the Earthly Branch relationships between two people's animal signs. The most harmonious pairings are the Six Harmonies (六合) — pairs of signs that naturally support each other — and the Three Harmonies (三合) trios that form elemental alliances. The most challenging pairings are the Six Clashes (六冲), where opposing branches create friction and instability.
Beyond animal signs, a full compatibility analysis examines the Five Element balance of both charts, the Day Master dynamics, and cross-pillar interactions. Our free Compatibility page shows the harmony and clash tables, while the full Compatibility Report goes deeper with multi-dimensional scoring.
What are the Six Harmonies and Six Clashes?
The Six Harmonies (六合, Liù Hé) are six pairs of Earthly Branches that produce a harmonious elemental transformation when they meet: Rat–Ox, Tiger–Pig, Rabbit–Dog, Dragon–Rooster, Snake–Monkey, and Horse–Goat. These pairings tend to create supportive, cooperative energy — in relationships, business partnerships, or the day's energy interacting with your natal sign.
The Six Clashes (六冲, Liù Chōng) are six pairs of directly opposing branches that create tension or disruption: Rat–Horse, Ox–Goat, Tiger–Monkey, Rabbit–Rooster, Dragon–Dog, and Snake–Pig. A clash is not always negative — it can also bring sudden change, momentum, or a necessary shake-up. See the full tables on our Compatibility page.
Is the free compatibility check the same as the full Compatibility Report?
No — they are different in depth. The free compatibility tables on the Compatibility page show whether two animal signs are in a Harmony, Clash, or neutral relationship using the classic branch tables. This is useful for a quick overview.
The paid Compatibility Report is a full multi-page Ba Zi analysis that compares both people's complete charts across five dimensions — including elemental balance, Day Master dynamics, and the cross-pillar relationships that the simple animal-sign tables completely miss. It also includes personalised advice on how to make the most of the relationship.
Can I check compatibility for business relationships?
Absolutely. Ba Zi has always been used for business and career decisions as well as romantic partnerships. The Compatibility Report includes separate scores and commentary for romantic, friendship, and business compatibility — the same chart interactions manifest differently depending on the nature of the relationship. A clash that creates too much friction for romance might produce productive creative tension for a business partnership.
You can also use the Friends feature (available to logged-in users on sign pages) to add colleagues and see your dual-sign combination at a glance.
Does the compatibility system account for both Western and Chinese signs?
Yes. When you create a profile, we also calculate your Western sun sign from your birth date. Our sign pages and Friends section show your dual-sign combination — for example, "Capricorn Water Ox" — and we have 144 dual-sign combination descriptions covering every possible pairing. The full Compatibility Report focuses on Ba Zi but acknowledges both systems in its framing.
